Sims Recycling Solutions urges all to Recycle Computers to Save Resources

Help Sims encourage all to assist in the preservation of our earth's finite resources.

ROSEVILLE, CA, December 02, 2010 /Environment PR News/ -- Sims Recycling Solutions is calling for greater global recycling of computer and ICT equipment in order to preserve the earth's finite resources of precious and rare earth metals. The company says that unless recycling of computer and ICT equipment is substantially increased, the world will start to run out of the metals needed to make the equipment within the next two decades.

Sims Recycling Solutions' Reggie Chesson said: "Many organizations and businesses are now waking up to the fact that surplus ICT equipment should not be treated as waste as it contains valuable resources that can be re-used. We have a duty to sustain the earth's resources by recycling ICT assets and we are pleased that awareness of this issue is becoming more widespread. We rely heavily on computers and other ICT products in everyday life and the bottom line is that we are rapidly running out of the materials we need to manufacture them.

If the equipment does end up in a third world country, not only are informal recycling processes poisoning both workers and the local environment, but the processes do not recover anywhere near the same amount of materials. Informal recycling processes concentrate mainly on gold, steel and copper and therefore recover only around a maximum of 57% of the materials. By comparison, professional recycling companies recover more than 90% of the materials, including rare and precious metals.

The global volume of scrap electronics is increasing at an extraordinary rate, year on year, and the bottom line is that we need to start recovering more of the precious and rare earth metals which this scrap contains. We cannot afford to bury our heads in the sand and hope that the problem will go away."

Sims Recycling Solutions has been at the forefront of the Green IT agenda for over a decade, developing specialist technologies for the asset management, recovery and recycling of ICT equipment. This commitment has seen a host of other standards and awards.
